fully qualified? One in eight isn’t – but every
single 1st Gear Driving School instructor is

If you are in any boubt there’s an easy way to spot the difference
between fully qualified and trainee instructors.

Fully qualified instructors are required to
display a green octagonal windscreen badge.
The badge for trainee driving instructors is
a pink triangle. It indicates that they haven’t
passed their ‘part 3’ exam – the hardest one,
which has a 70% failure rate.
Beware of phrases like ‘DSA-approved’ or
‘DSA-licensed’ – this means that the instructor
is registered with the DSA, but it doesn’t mean
they are fully qualified. Also, beware of the
phrase ‘qualified instructor’, because trainees
are partly qualified, but have yet to sit the key
exam on their ability to instruct.
